Top 5 Most Popular Ann Arbor Coffee Shops

The Shops

lab cafe

505 E Liberty St # 300

Article

The Vibe: Minimalist, Bright, Serene

Our emoji to describe it: 🪴

About lab cafe:

After speaking with the baristas, I found out that Lab's coffee wasn't even the best thing about the cafe. They were super kind and let me know that the owner of Lab and the neighboring Tomukun Noodle Bar are married, hence the doorway that connects the cafe and the restaurant! The baristas said that they feel like Lab is a true community, one that has provided them with friendships and opportunities they wouldn't have had access to otherwise. As a small business run by a University of Michigan alum, it's obvious that Lab puts employees first, something I definitely stand behind.

Thank you to the mentioned baristas Skye Bawol, Matt Popp, Ayden Williams and Kenzie Newby!

Argus Farm Stop — Packard Cafe:

Argus Farm Stop opened in 2014 as a mission-based, everyday farmers market. Due to high demand, Argus opened a new location on Packard in 2017, separated into two halves: a market selling produce and other farm-to-table products and a cafe offering coffee and small bites. The two shops have their own entrances (facing the two locations, the market is the shop to the left, and the cafe is the one to the right).

Comet Coffee

16 Nickels Arcade

Article

The Vibe: Quaint, cultured, continental,

Our emoji to describe it: 🪻

About Comet Coffee:

When enjoying coffee, the environs in which we drink are as important as the quality of that drink. A favorite among campus professors and students, Comet Coffee knows this well. With the atmosphere of a classic continental cafe and its convenient — yet somewhat secluded — location, Comet Coffee is a must-try for any student or Ann Arborite who hasn't been yet. Readers, couples of every age, professors and students fueled by their doppios are all common sightings. It's both aesthetically coherent, with pleasantly colored cups and saucers for each drink, and offers some of the highest quality coffee in town. If Wes Anderson came to Ann Arbor, we know where he'd get his coffee.

Misfit Society Coffee Club

615 E University Ave

Article

The Vibe: Punk-rock, Cozy, Vibrant,

Our emoji to describe it: 🧷

About Misfit Society Coffee Club:

The most recent addition to Ann Arbor's coffee scene, Misfit immediately stands out with its profanity-laden advertising and its neon “caffeine plug” sign. Inside, it lives up to this rebellious image: If there's one thing you absolutely can't criticize Misfit for, it's inconsistency. It knows what it wants to be — a place for good coffee with a punk-inspired aesthetic — and pulls it off perfectly.

Shinola Cafe

301 S Main St

Article

The Vibe: Chill, soothing, peaceful,

Our emoji to describe it: 😌

About Shinola Cafe:

Shinola's Ann Arbor location is not visibly a coffee shop from the outside. The Detroit-based company is primarily a luxury watch and bag shop. But, as evidenced by the coffee shop tucked in the basement of S. Main Street and the existence of their hotel in Detroit, Shinola has expanded into other areas of business.
